Success: An Individual Mindset

Success: An Individual Mindset

In the midst of a conversation with an old friend from high school, I stumbled upon an idea. This friend was mentioning my success, and how it gave them a sense of pride to witness. I quickly thought back at what all I had been through to get to where I am, and the current obstacles I face on any given day. Enjoyment was not my first feeling. I was quickly taken over, however; with pride as I continued to think of the lessons I have learned in this journey. These lessons came from short term defeats and the ways I turned them into long term victories. Stubbornness can disguise you as resilient, if you run out of motivation!

After a few minutes this was my reply:

“Thank you! Success is something you work towards everyday. It can have a flexible meaning depending on a person’s outlook. Stay positive in the outlook and success is inevitable!”

For a few days, I continued to dwell on this statement I had just made, almost to the point of worrisome. I thought of my athletes who struggle with learning a movement or missing a PR attempt. I thought of my friends who have lost their battles to mental distress, alcoholism, or addiction. I thought of my new wife who (due to my entrepreneurism) spends too much time without me. It all made me wonder if the success that others saw was actually the success I was working towards. It is not.

At that moment I realized for certain, success was something we create in our minds. It is formed by our past experiences and our future desires. All too often it gets swayed by the opinions of others and society as well; however it belongs to us. You have to decide to own your vision of success.

So here is the quick take away. Sit down and decide what your perfect day looks like. Who is in it, how do you fill the day and how do you feel? Chances are that perfect day may seem pretty far off. Do not get discouraged! Instead stay focused, make smaller goals to achieve, and let them lead you in the right direction. Be relentless in your pursuit! After-all it is your success we are talking about, not my version of it. Always remember: “Success is something you work towards everyday. It can have a flexible meaning depending on a person’s outlook. Stay positive in the outlook and success is inevitable!” See you in the box!
