When we first begin CrossFit, we are faced with the paradox of staying tight and engaged; especially through the core/mid-line, while at the same time breathing. Initially, most beginners will only be able to do one or the other but not both simultaneously. With practice and time these skills will become easier and more natural.
We are currently smack dab in the middle of the 2016 CrossFit Open. Our intensity levels and grind will be tested more than they would be on just an average day in the gym. Anyone who has been to either of our Friday Night Lights events can attest to that. The energy is high, and many times when we are pushing to levels that we don’t normally go to we forget to breathe! It sounds strange, but many of us can remember WODs where we were so focused on doing this-or-that, or staying tight, that we forgot to breathe. Even the most well-conditioned athlete will not last long if he is holding his breath. Focus on your breathing, pattern it to your reps like a runner does to his stride, and watch your intensity levels rise and be maintained for longer periods than normal. Now, go try it out! And remember…BREATHE!
